Those were the days

I’ve spent a large part of my working life in front of a camera - in kitchens, local markets, restaurants, and in a busy office filled with food enthusiasts.

From my early years in television, when the industry itself was still finding its feet, to hosting food shows across NDTV, the journey has shaped how I think about food.

There was travel, a great deal of tasting, and more time than I can count spent standing shoulder to shoulder with chefs. Somewhere along the way, the focus shifted - from just how something tasted, to what went into it, and what it did for you.

Hosting Gordon Ramsay in Delhi was one of those moments that stayed with me. Watching him step into the legendary Moti Mahal kitchen - no fuss, just curiosity, a tandoor, and a lot of energy - was genuinely memorable.

During my years at NDTV, I also started thinking more closely about how food was being represented and talked about. That thinking eventually found its way into NDTV Food.

Back in the day, things were very different. Today, with Instagram, this new website, and podcasts, I’m finding my way more into the digital space - but the ethos of food, nutrition, and flavour remains the same.

If you feel as nostalgic about this journey as I do, or are simply discovering my food ethos for the first time, join me as we look back - and forward.

Looking Back

Those years were a mix of travel, long shoots, and a lot of trial and error.

They were a constant exercise in learning - about ingredients, about food habits, and about the way people relate to what they eat. Long before “wellness” became a category, these were conversations that were already beginning to take shape.

I had started much earlier, back in 1992, as a researcher on Newstrack, when television was still finding its space in our lives. That instinct to question, to look a little closer, has stayed with me.

It’s just moved into health, food, and nutrition now.

And in many ways, what I do in my kitchen today still comes from those years - just a little quieter, and without the camera quite as close.
